It is therefore essential that society do its best to help these youths develop a sense of social awareness. We also aspire to encourage the exchange of ideas amongst young people and to allow a channel for them to express their ideas to the public. The Hong Kong Youth Summit 2004 aimed at developing youths' sense of belonging towards Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Youth Summit 2004 was a simulation of the General Assembly of the United Nations. In the Summit, participants will analyse current issues from different perspectives, discuss the issues thoroughly and finally draft proposals for improvement to the government. We hope that through this process, youths will learn the importance of considering the interests of Hong Kong as a whole. 160 Forms Four and Six students from local and international schools throughout Hong Kong were invited for this project. #3 Student Leaders of Tomorrow Scheme 2004 Student Leaders of Tomorrow Scheme was a pioneer approach to traditional leadership training of the Hong Kong Outstanding Students' Association. That year, the theme of our scheme is known as "My Portrait as a Youth". The aim was to help student leaders to better observe and understand, while at the same time observe themselves—have a clearer self-image. Unlike the usual leadership training schemes, this scheme provided more than leadership skills and served as a medium for student leaders. Participants were able to extend their scope of the world, as we focused on training participants by allowing them interaction with outstanding social leaders of different sectors of the community, thus enabling them realize their own values through participation. We hoped that they could bring what they had acquired back to school through their reputation of student leaders at schools and pass it on to other students, especially the future leaders. 50 Chairpersons and Vice-chairpersons of Students' Association of schools were invited for this project. #4 Interflow Camp 2004 The theme "G Generation" of the Interflow Camp that year was about globalisation and the role that the participants should play. The theme was set because we hoped to arouse the concern of participants about the international community. We would also like our participants to have a better understanding on poverty, malnutrition and other problems which are threatening the whole world. Hong Kong is an international city and its ties with the rest of the world are tight. Therefore, students should have a stronger sense of global citizenship and develop an interest to concern for global issues. They should be encouraged to analyse and interpret international issues from a broader global perspective. Through the interflow camp, we hoped that our participants could learn to be conscientious and responsible members of the international community. They should be able to comprehend the interdependence of different cities, nations and continents so that they could be most committed to take a more active role in global issues. Also, by identifying the problems the world is facing, we hoped that participants could also suggest solutions to these problems and help build a better place to live in. 120 Secondary 3 to 5 students from 34 secondary schools were invited for this project. 【港孩體驗】執半日玻璃鋁罐 賣到幾多錢？ Date posted: 23/07/2016 一班多數來自中產家庭的名校生，上次體驗完傷殘人士的生活後，又再有其他搞作，根據官方數字，香港共有132萬貧窮人口，貧窮率為19.6%，其實社會上有不少人都是依賴拾荒，賺取微薄的收入維生，今次一於要這班學生體驗貧窮生活。一大清早，他們就去到灣仔集合，準備到區內的後巷執拾玻璃樽及鋁罐拿去變賣，以換取當日的午飯錢。大熱天時三十幾度，要在區內東奔西跑找「獵物」，到底他們捱唔捱得住呢？加上組內有很多女孩子，又能否接受後巷惡劣的環境呢？最後又執到幾多「戰利品」，賣得幾錢呢？ 記者：黃子配 攝影：潘志恆

Published materials in 2002-2003 and activites organised by the 16th ExCo. < Back 2002-2003 16th ExCo Year Last Updated: 11 Sept 2024 Tags: SamariKIDZ, Interflow Camp, Youth Summit #1 Volunteer Training Scheme 2002 "SamariKIDZ" was one of the new projects of the Hong Kong Outstanding Students' Association that year. The word "SamariKIDZ" is a merge from the words "Samaritan" and "Kids". The Good Samaritan is a Biblical character well-known for his charity and compassion for others, while "Kids" refers to our Primary 4 to 6 participants in this scheme. For the previous 4 years, we had geared our Volunteer Training Scheme projects towards students from Form 3 to 5, but that year, we have decided to aim the "SamariKIDZ" project towards younger students in Hong Kong, in order to develop a sense of awareness in serving the needy at a young age. Our goal was to promote the importance of helping others through doing social service. Apart from introducing the fundamental practical skills in organizing social service projects to the participants, we aspired to nurture and embed in the participants the heart and vision to serve the community, by strengthening their personal qualities that are most essential when doing voluntary services. It was our hope that the participants can learn to acquire such virtues and become truly Good Samaritans through participating in the Volunteer Training Scheme 2002-2003 – "SamariKIDZ". Primary 4 to 6 students from approximately 20 primary schools in Hong Kong were invited for this project. #2 Hong Kong Youth Summit 2003 Hong Kong had faced many challenges in recent years, from the bursting of the bubble economy in 1997 to the SARS outbreak early that year, making all of us realised we could no longer afford to be complacent. It was vital for teenagers, on whose shoulders the future rests on, to be socially awared and to have a sense of belonging towards Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Youth Summit was a simulation of the General Assembly of the United Nations: through a series of discussions, participants analysed problems from different perspectives to make realistic proposals for improvement to the Government. This project would enable our youth to think deeply about social issues and realise that they have the ability to contribute to the betterment of our society. Two hundred Forms 4 to 6 students from over fifty-three local and international schools throughout Hong Kong were invited for this project. #3 Interflow Camp 2003 The theme of the Interflow Camp 2003, "World Peace — Let's sPArK it UP!", was to spread the message of World Peace, teamwork and co-operation among participants. We had incorporated a number of challenging Mass Games, which require participants not only to work as a team, but also form coalitions with other groups in order to "survive". Our aim was to stress on promoting Peace among the groups, as well as the importance of working together as a whole. One hundred students ranging from Form 3 to Form 5, from over thirty secondary schools throughout Hong Kong were invited for this project. This camp took place in a Cultural Chinese setting thousands of years ago, where those with strong martial arts skills ruled China. Once upon a time, there were ten Wulin tribes in China who were just as strong as each other, each having its own distinct strengths and qualities and believed that they were better than one another. As a result, the tribes fought to become the strongest and most powerful of them all. Each tribe sends ten of their top leaders to the 3-day Martial Conference to represent their people. They must fulfil many tasks which require not only physical endurance, speed, agility and perseverance but also quick decision-making skills, logical thinking, creativity, grace and intellect. This conference slowly transforms into a war among the ten tribes, forcing them to form allies with other tribes until they reach the ultimate understanding that Peace and Cooperation will be the only way the tribes can utilize their qualities to the fullest. Although the words War and Peace seem to contradict each other, the 3-day Conference (our camp) aims to allow the leaders (our participants) to explore the real meaning of War and Peace, eventually leading them to the conception that progress will only be made amongst groups through cooperation. Published materials in 2021-2022 and activites organised by the 35th ExCo. < Back 2021-2022 35th ExCo Year Last Updated: 11 Sept 2024 Tags: Social Service Series, Youth Summit, Coffee Chat, Study Abroad Series #1 Voyage Beyond: Social Service Series The " Voyage Beyond " Social Service Series, organised jointly by the Hong Kong Outstanding Students’ Association and Aberdeen Kai-fong Welfare Association, was successfully held from November to December 2021. Targeting young children from low-income families, the activities aimed to pique their interest in English through interactive methods and increase their confidence in speaking English in the long run. Volunteers' Training Workshops A series of activities were designed by volunteers from different secondary schools and the our ExCo members over the period. Training workshops were held November by our ExCo members to brief volunteers on the programme and equip them with the necessary event management and communication skills. Service Sessions 1 & 2: Storytelling The service sessions kickstarted in December. A dozen of young participants listened to tales from around the world in engaging storytelling sessions and played group games that consolidated their newly acquired knowledge. Tales told in the sessions include " Momotaro" from Japan and "The Empty Pot" from ancient China. The activities exposed our participants to different cultures and taught them to embrace the diversity across borders. Service Session 3: Fun Day Towards the end of the programme, participants had a fun time making kibi dango , a snack which appeared in the Japanese story. The social service series concluded with a taste-testing session of the snacks prepared and a group photo session. A Very Merry Christmas Overall, responses from both the volunteers and children are positive as evidenced by their active participation in the programme and post-event evaluation. Designed to be different from the usual classroom setting, the highly interactive Voyage Beyond social service series made English more approachable for young learners, and gave them a taste of travelling abroad at the time when outbound travel became difficult. As our vision goes, we will continue to make unremitting efforts to “synergise and serve” different disadvantaged groups. #2 Uni Hub (Postponed due to the Pandemic) Every year, plenty of our members embark on their journeys at university, where they might encounter different adversities and uncertainties. UniHub was aimed at providing a platform for senior OSArs to give guidance and support to freshmen OSArs of the same university, accompanying them during ups and downs in the new environment. Unfortunately, due to the 5th wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was postponed. #3 Hong Kong Youth Summit 2022 The Hong Kong Youth Summit 2022: “ Anti-Apocalypse ” was successfully held from April 12 - 14. In the three-day virtual event, our guest speakers: Mr. Jason Yip, Prof. Jonathan Choi, and Ms. Benita Chick gave inspiring and informative keynote speeches as participants drew inspiration from their talks and explored pressing global issues threatening humanity. The speeches were interspersed with group activities , such as a friendly debate, a trivia, and a session for participants to design their future planet. On the last day of the event, participants gave creative presentations followed by a Q&A session on a wide range of topics that were chosen based on their interests, including the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, the impact of artificial intelligence on social media, and plastic pollution. Each group also proposed solutions to tackle the challenges, responding to the theme “ Anti-Apocalypse ” of the event. While humanity faces many challenges in these uncertain times, the Hong Kong Youth Summit 2022 is a reminder that the world is not beyond saving and highlights the importance of engaging the youth in addressing global problems .
