Published materials in 2016-2017 and activites organised by the 30th ExCo. < Back 2016-2017 30th ExCo Year Last Updated: 11 Sept 2024 Tags: Project Vista, Youth Summit #1 Project Vista 2017 Introduction Project Vista 2017 will be held in July. This programme is aimed at helping participants gain insight in the social issues related to our theme this year. The focus will be on the direct experience of these issues through a close encounter with the relevant stakeholders and a deep and critical reflection on these issues through various challenging tasks and group work after the experiencing sessions. Theme of PV 17 Our theme this year is “Rediscover the Fading Colours”. Due to the economic structure, the education system and the influence of the media and other stakeholders in society, the definition of being successful, being outstanding and contributing to Hong Kong has become increasingly narrow, perhaps limited to a few career choices. It is against this context that we chose the theme “Rediscover the Fading Colours”. We hope our participants could learn more about industries that were more prominent in the past but face a declining awareness and interest from Hong Kong youths and have a rethink of the role these industries could play in advancing the city’s future. Programme highlights Immersive workshops The four highlight industries for our theme this year are minibus signs(小巴水牌), movable-type printing(活字印刷), traditional costumes(傳統服裝) and vintage snacks(懷舊小食). We are cooperating with selected practitioners of these industries to offer tailor-made immersive workshops to participants. Participants will be engaged in one of these industries in which they could observe the daily working procedures, try out certain working procedures and converse and interact with the practitioners to gain an immersive understanding of the industry. Labour simulation Apart from the four highlight industries, many industries or careers in Hong Kong are also facing a decline in awareness and interest. We are offering a simulation for participants in which they have to cooperate with one another to complete certain physical tasks. Specific rules and details of the simulation will be announced during the experiencing camp. Documentary production and sharing Participants will form groups based on which highlight industry they were engaged in to produce a 12-minute documentary about the industry and their experience in the programme. To allow participants from different groups to exchange insight about their respective industries, all documentaries will be played in a cinema during the closing ceremony in which special guests would be invited to attend. Special awards would be given to commend documentaries with quality and made with effort. We are cooperating with qualified individuals or organisations to provide guidance to participants in producing the documentaries. Our vision Through the aforementioned activities, we hope participants could rediscover the gradually neglected parts of Hong Kong society which made it so unique in the first place, and form their own informed opinions on the vista, or outlook of Hong Kong in the future. Programme specifics Orientation Day: 2nd July, 2017 Experiencing Camp: 6th July, 2017 to 9th July, 2017 Closing Ceremony cum Documentary Sharing: 28th July, 2017 Details of the programme rundown will be released soon. Theme of YS 17 “Diversity, Harmony, Understand the Variety” In recent years, conflicts among various social groups have intensified greatly. To give participants a chance to understand more about the diversity among them and to have a clearer picture of the variety of our Hong Kong society, we have chosen “Diversity, Harmony, Understand the Variety” as the theme of YS 17. Ultimately, we hope participants will understand that despite living in diversity, we can still live together in harmony through understanding and acceptance and come up with a resolution for different topics to create a more inclusive Hong Kong. The technicalities In YS 17, all participants will be divided into groups, each assigned to a commission group (eg. Education, Social Welfare etc.) and a stakeholder group (e.g. Minority, the Poor etc.). Throughout the whole Summit, participants will take on roles of the assigned groups and debate on social issues related to our theme. Participants must defend their stakeholders’ interests during the debate and the Commission meetings. Eventually, they will be required to come up with a resolution of each social issue discussed during meetings and forums, and analyse the stance of each stakeholder groups towards the issue. The resolutions and analyses will be compiled into a magazine which will be published to the sponsors, guest speakers, participated schools as well as the relevant government departments. Commission Meetings will be supplemented by a series of Interviews and Excursions as well as seminars and talks given by our guests-of-honour. Participants will come into close contact with actual members of their stakeholders’ group and the leading experts in the relevant social issues. Workshops in Commission Meeting rules and public speaking will also be arranged. These experiences, in addition to the Information Pack prepared by the Organising Committee, will allow delegates to engage in productive discussions competently. To better facilitate discussions and debates, we will invite experts from various sectors of the society and government officials as our guest speakers to provide us with more information on the specific issues. Participants will also have a chance to debate with our guest speakers during the City Forum or seminar sections. Our vision By the end of YS 17, we hope that our participants will have developed a strong sense of social awareness and had some insights towards the variety and diversity of different stakeholder groups in Hong Kong. We hope essential skills such as critical thinking, delivering public speech and also expressing personal opinion through writing can be developed or strengthened during the event. We aim at using YS17 as a platform to encourage our participants to paint a clearer picture of Hong Kong and hence contribute in the future by becoming responsible leaders of the society. The focus of this year’s project is “Cultural Sparks”. Hong Kong is a multi-cultured cosmopolitan city. With various cultures, conflicts sometimes happen due to misunderstandings. However, we believe that a mixture of diverse cultures can create positive sparks and allow different cultures to appreciate each others’ uniqueness. Through looking at a country from a native’s perspective, participants’ understanding of a culture will be deeply fostered. The scheme will last for approximately four weeks, during which the participants will learn about the culture, history, language and current affairs related to an assigned country. They will partake in activities as well as experience the cultural practices of their respective countries to cultivate their interest and to deepen their knowledge. The project will conclude with a day in which participants set up booths to display what they have learnt about culture and their respective countries in the programme. Apart from that, the participants will experience the rituals and daily lives of different cultures in which the participants will demonstrate and exchange their knowledge of their assigned countries with guests who have assisted in the organisation of the project. Bearing the theme “ Beyond Boundaries, Project Prosperity – the Six Industries ”, investigating the six industries as proposed in the Policy Address 2009-2010. As Hong Kong faces an increasing competition with neighbouring regions such as Shanghai, Singapore and Taipei, alternatives have to be arrived at in the development of Hong Kong, propelling her towards a knowledge-based economy and increasing her competitiveness. The emphasis of this year’s Youth Summit will be on the possibilities and potentials of these six industries as an alternative to the traditional industries in the development of Hong Kong, as well as the prospects in specific fields, such as education services, innovation and technology and cultural and creative industries. Objectives - To enhance participants’ awareness of social issues - To inspire participants to think critically and analytically - To encourage the exchange of ideas among participants - To provide a channel for them to express their ideas in public - To develop a sense of belonging to Hong Kong - To develop the creative potentials of participants through providing solutions to existing problems Target Group 120 Secondary 4 and Secondary 6 students in Hong Kong The participants should: - Display an interest in current affairs - Be able to think critically - Be outspoken - Have an active engagement in school activities and volunteering services - Be conversationally fluent in Cantonese and English Details of the Summit Leadership Groups • Low-income Group • Middle-income Group • Small and Medium Enterprises in Hong Kong • Big Companies • Professional • Environmental Activists • Foreign Companies in Hong Kong • Government 1 (Land Use) • Government 2 (Education, Health & Home Affairs) • Youth Commission Groups • Education Services • Medical Services • Testing and Certification Services • Environmental Services • Innovation and Technology • Cultural and Creative Industries Interviews and Excursions Participants will visit or interview organisations or guests that are related to their Leadership Groups. We also hope that students would discover their dreams and aspirations through our projects throughout the year. Through workshops and service programmes, participants will be provided the opportunity to ‘Experience the earth” by learning about the needy in Hong Kong and serving the community. We hope to instil in our participants “Love for the Living” by assisting them in designing their own service programmes to serve two target groups, elderly and ethnic minority children. Geared with experience, skills and a passion to serve, it is hoped that participants will be able to “Reach to reality” and continue to contribute to social services in the future. Similar to other projects organised by our Association, this scheme will offer educational programmes such as training workshops and seminars to well-equip the participants with practical skills and specific knowledge in dealing with different clients. In addition to these sessions, a four-week Service Project will be held. Participants will focus on two different targets, namely the elderly and ethnic minority children. Half of the participants will be encouraged to interact with young clients of ethnic minority groups. Meanwhile, the other half of the participants will be focusing on serving the elderly. In order to achieve a long-term dedication in our participants, we would like to emphasise the continuity of passion in service in our participants. Most of the service projects offer one-time service sessions and lack continuity. In view of this, we would like to build up the idea of continual service – that their passion should not extinguish after the service programme. In order to achieve this goal, participants will engage in bi-monthly visits after the scheme. Apart from continuity, our hope this year is to cultivate a sense of global citizenship in our participants through INGO visits and experience sharing by international volunteers. Visits will be organised to international organisations serving ethnic minority children and the elderly during the project. Participants can interview volunteers who have engaged in services overseas and learn from their dedication and experience. Lastly, it is our sincerest hope that through the Volunteer Training Scheme 2010, participants will not only recognise their obligation, but also realise their own strengths and weaknesses in the course of interacting with like-minded peers. The theme of this year’s project is ‘ Helping Hearts, Linking Lands ’. Through the Volunteer Training Scheme 2010, we hope that our participants can traverse both land and culture with their passion to serve. Apart from gaining local experience of service, we would like to give participants a global perspective so that they may apply the experience gained to doing international voluntary work. The principle of continuity will be put into practice. Programme Rundown Orientation Day Date: 13th March 2010 (Saturday) Time: 14.00 – 18.00 Service Project (Stage 1) Date: 14th March 2010 (Sunday) - 26th March 2010 (Friday) Volunteer Day Date: 20th March 2010 (Saturday) Time: 12.00 - 16.15 Adventure Day Date: 21st March 2010 (Saturday) Time: 08.00 - 18.00 Pledge Day Date: 27th March 2010 (Saturday) Time: 14.00 - 17.00 Service Project (Stage 2 to Stage 4) Date: 2nd April 2010 (Friday) - 24th May April (Saturday) Organisation Visits Date: 8th April 2010 (Thursday) - 21st April 2010 (Wednesday) Evaluation Meetings Date: 25th April 2010 (Sunday) - 7th May 2010 (Friday) Closing Ceremony Date: 8th May 2010 (Saturday) Time: 13.30 - 18.00 Continuity Around 1 session will be arranged monthly or bi-monthly to maintain the continuity of the projects. The term “Ecovation” is the amalgamation of sustainability and a concern for ecological processes. Its inspiration often follows a desire to live a lower impact lifestyle and a higher environmental conscience. The camp will simulate a United Nations Climate Change Conference (Copenhagen 2009), where scientists and climatologists from 8 different countries (here represented by the participants) meet to discuss the roadmap for a sustainable lifestyle, as well as brainstorm new ideas of how the idea of ‘green’ can be incorporated into the lives of people. The ‘conference’ will be chaired by politicians, hereby represented by members of the Executive Committee and the Organising committee, each of whom pursuit different agendas. Amongst them will be some who wishes to promote profit over environment and are hindering the world’s well-being. During the meeting process, the participants, playing the role of youth scientists, will have to perform creative and challenging tasks which require creative thinking, team cooperation, presentation, communication, and other inter-personal skills. One of the key highlights of the camp would be a "Cap and Trade" game, where the widely proposed model of carbon trading is played out with different countries having different levels of production, resources, and thus a difference in carbon production. The theme game aims to inform participants the core of the principles of our climate change development on a global perspective. It is hoped that through this simulation, participants will be given ample opportunities to let their ideas and imagination soar and potentials to be unleashed. The Camp also aims at helping participants to overcome their self-limitations, develop their original thinking and problem-solving skills. Through enjoyable workshops and educational games, participants will be able to exchange their ideas with and learn from their peers. Target Group 80 Secondary 3 to Secondary 5 students from local secondary schools and international schools Participants should: • Be Secondary 3 to Secondary 5 • Be responsible and prompt • Be able to think critically • Be active and creative Tentative Programme Rundown Orientation Day Date: 10th July 2010 (Saturday) Time: 13:00 - 17:30 Venue: Kwun Tong Maryknoll College (100 Tsui Ping Road, Kwun Tong, Kowloon) Interflow Camp Date: 27th July - 29th July 2010 (Tuesday - Thursday) Venue: Po Leung Kuk Pak Tam Chung Holiday Camp Visitations to Organisations Date: Between 10th July 2010 and 27th July 2010 Venue: EcoHome and EcoPark Previous Year Next Year

And once again this year, the event is to be held in the hopes of consolidating the beliefs of the association. Acting as a platform for the youth, the future leaders of Hong Kong, to exchange views and opinions on current issues of economic and social significance, the Summit aims to inspire participants to develop critical thinking and analytical skills as well as political standpoints. This is to be achieved through a series of leadership group and commission meetings, discussion and debate, informative speeches and seminars by eminent members of the Hong Kong Government and experts in the field. Thus, students will be inspired to analyse current issues from different perspectives, put forward and elaborate solutions in the form of resolutions. Distressingly, Hong Kong has recently been faced with an increasing number of issues, namely the “deep-rooted conflicts”, which begin to threaten the cornerstone values of the city and the beliefs of the general public, amid greater challenges from Mainland China, as well as the rest of the world, in various forms. Bearing the theme “Transcend Formalities, Unearth Possibilities" , the Summit shall look into the limitations that are halting our progress, as well as proposing creative solutions. What we can observe, at this very moment, are the growing hostility among stakeholders in society and serious social issues that are undermining the prosperous future of the city. Thus, this year’s Youth Summit participants will look into conflicts arising in different aspects including Housing, Social Welfare, Hong Kong-Mainland Clashes and more. The Hong Kong Youth Summit 2013 will feature ten different stake-holding sectors of society. Participants will be allocated to different Leadership Groups to put forward resolutions to specific issues through negotiations and discussions. Drafted resolutions will then be proposed, discussed and debated on in the Final Summit. The resolutions will then be sent to the press, the Legislative Council, respective government departments and related organisations such as Home Affairs Bureau, Education Bureau, Environment Bureau, the Commission on Youth and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in an attempt to reflect the views of Hong Kong youths. This year, it is scheduled as one of our largest annual projects. The camp provides a valuable opportunity for secondary school students to interact and learn outside the classroom, and share their views and experiences on teen vision. Our aim is to broaden students’ perspective of how they can make a difference to the world, through various interactive services, games and activities. This year, the Camp shall focus on the fundamental values and skills of the upcoming generation. These include social participation and commitment, which we believe are the very essence of personal development in the youth of Hong Kong, and imperative for the success of the society’s future leaders. The main theme of Interflow Camp this year is ‘Ideation’. As a student organization, the HKOSA is always seeking to developing talents in teenagers with the potential to serve the community as leaders. The Interflow Camp of this year will be of an unprecedented nature which guides participants to envisage their future and achieve their life goals, in addition to honing their leadership and communication skills. The theme - “Ideation” carries a significant meaning of formulating the future pathway to succeed and planning for their own life map. Bearing this theme, we would like to introduce a brand new experience to participants - a chance to taste their lives in the future. For instance, they have to face job interviews and challenges brought by their “jobs”, which we believe would be an invaluable chance for secondary students without any prior job experiences. Through “rehearsing” their future in one day, we hope that participants can have more insight into their lives after graduation. Since this 3-day camp will be held in the campus of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the camp would allow participants a glimpse of university life, since the various events would be held at different venues in the campus. Participants are expected to learn more on planning their future via talks and mentorship programmes held during the camp. In conclusion, we hope that this event would assist participants in making an informed decision on the direction of their future pathways, and to inspire them to be a successful leader. The word "SamariKIDZ" is a merge from the words "Samaritan" and "Kids". The Good Samaritan is a Biblical character well-known for his charity and compassion for others, while "Kids" refers to our Primary 4 to 6 participants in this scheme. For the previous 4 years, we had geared our Volunteer Training Scheme projects towards students from Form 3 to 5, but that year, we have decided to aim the "SamariKIDZ" project towards younger students in Hong Kong, in order to develop a sense of awareness in serving the needy at a young age. Our goal was to promote the importance of helping others through doing social service. Apart from introducing the fundamental practical skills in organizing social service projects to the participants, we aspired to nurture and embed in the participants the heart and vision to serve the community, by strengthening their personal qualities that are most essential when doing voluntary services. It was our hope that the participants can learn to acquire such virtues and become truly Good Samaritans through participating in the Volunteer Training Scheme 2002-2003 – "SamariKIDZ". Primary 4 to 6 students from approximately 20 primary schools in Hong Kong were invited for this project. #2 Hong Kong Youth Summit 2003 Hong Kong had faced many challenges in recent years, from the bursting of the bubble economy in 1997 to the SARS outbreak early that year, making all of us realised we could no longer afford to be complacent. It was vital for teenagers, on whose shoulders the future rests on, to be socially awared and to have a sense of belonging towards Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Youth Summit was a simulation of the General Assembly of the United Nations: through a series of discussions, participants analysed problems from different perspectives to make realistic proposals for improvement to the Government. This project would enable our youth to think deeply about social issues and realise that they have the ability to contribute to the betterment of our society. Two hundred Forms 4 to 6 students from over fifty-three local and international schools throughout Hong Kong were invited for this project. #3 Interflow Camp 2003 The theme of the Interflow Camp 2003, "World Peace — Let's sPArK it UP!", was to spread the message of World Peace, teamwork and co-operation among participants. We had incorporated a number of challenging Mass Games, which require participants not only to work as a team, but also form coalitions with other groups in order to "survive". Our aim was to stress on promoting Peace among the groups, as well as the importance of working together as a whole. One hundred students ranging from Form 3 to Form 5, from over thirty secondary schools throughout Hong Kong were invited for this project. This camp took place in a Cultural Chinese setting thousands of years ago, where those with strong martial arts skills ruled China. Once upon a time, there were ten Wulin tribes in China who were just as strong as each other, each having its own distinct strengths and qualities and believed that they were better than one another. As a result, the tribes fought to become the strongest and most powerful of them all. Each tribe sends ten of their top leaders to the 3-day Martial Conference to represent their people. They must fulfil many tasks which require not only physical endurance, speed, agility and perseverance but also quick decision-making skills, logical thinking, creativity, grace and intellect. This conference slowly transforms into a war among the ten tribes, forcing them to form allies with other tribes until they reach the ultimate understanding that Peace and Cooperation will be the only way the tribes can utilize their qualities to the fullest. Although the words War and Peace seem to contradict each other, the 3-day Conference (our camp) aims to allow the leaders (our participants) to explore the real meaning of War and Peace, eventually leading them to the conception that progress will only be made amongst groups through cooperation.
